Ashford’s stride and form were much better than that Ghor.. she(Ghor) used to be refered to as the “sewing machine” because of her stride and form. No surprise that Ashford beat her easily in many races.. she had a wonderfull ability to relax … even under very stressfull circumstances .. which is key to great sprinting.

  2. ranhill says:

Wow, Gohr was on drugs a long time!

  3. uitvlugh says:

  5. WELLBRAN says:

So what do we all think of the Jamaican boys and girls ? pretty spectacular Eh ?

Yes I agree especially this week?

  6. uitvlugh says:

    what an ass

  7. hurdler600 says:

Just read the comment that Evelyn Ashford was clean – Oh really listen the only person that knows that for sure is Evelyn herself. Ive sat in front of and spoke to so many top internationals and olympic champions who all said they were clean and some were found to be cheats so save me the mother Theresa argument. I take the point that a systematic drug regime may over ride this comment i.e. The GDR etc.

    1976(18years old):11.17
    1977(19years old):10.88
In this Race,Avelyn Ashford was 11.48.
    Go Go Marlies Gohr!
I wish that Mr.Athlete 5399 could put more.
    You make me so glad.

  9. run3hours says:

In 1991,a young swimmer like man’s voice said in TV:We were surely given something by our goverment. But, at that time,we really did not that they wewe drug.We were given them as Vitamin. Later,we knew they wewe drug.

  10. athlete5399 says:

hehehe. I didnt see the documentary! And yeah, what was it with her and those knickers?!

  11. gorhman says:

Did she finally learn to keep her underwear into her running knickers?

  12. athlete5399 says:

I would love to hear what they think, believe me! There was an Australian documentary that had Raelene Boyle reunited with Renate Stecher (which she agreed to do). Stecher did not know they would show her the evidence of the drug taking – she was speechless!

  13. gorhman says:

Well maybe you are talking about those letters from Koch in wich she complained about Wöckel´s higher dosis of Oral Turibanol…frankly i guess thats pure speculation but believe me i would like to see what Görh, Koch and the rest of the troop of ex athletes from the East Germany would say in an interview nowdays or if they read all our opinions here…what do you think?

  14. athlete5399 says:

Of course I know they were victims, but when we know the facts as they are, I find it hard to praise their performances. Many knew they were on drugs and it was very competitive amongst them as to who got the best doses! Koch must have been a very good athlete in her own right, because simply taking drugs does not make a great athlete out of nothing.

  15. gorhman says:

The GDR sport system also included an exhaustive searhing of youg talents not only drugs. Koch and Göhr were maybe the 2 major talented sprinters of the GDR. I understand they didnt play clean but have you ever considered they were victims of their government? They had to give all their medals to the state they couldnt travel abroad, make enterviews. They had no freedom! They were victims of a cruel politic system. Athele5399 notice that The GDR didnt respect the human rights.Thats SAD to believe

  16. athlete5399 says:

And why do you think Gohr was fast from a young age, breaking the world record when she was 19 – because she was groomed through the GDR drug programme. Ashford was a natural fluid athlete. She did not possess the power that the GDR girls had, possibly because she wasn’t enhancing it in any way? And yes, she was 5 yards behind Gohr here, but to be 5 yards in front of her 2 years later would be a little super human dont u think?! So no, not hard to believe :-)

  17. gorhman says:

Well im sure Göhr was really fast when she was a young age too and her leg speed was even more than Ashford´s. In this race she is 5 meters behind Gohr and 2 years later in Rome she was 1 meter ahead (hard to believe?) so those reason are doubtfull. The truth is Asford never failed a drug test and Gohr yes so the facts show that Ashford was clean.

  18. hurdler600 says:

The really sad thing is that we dont really know. The Americans were also notorious cheats and especially since money entered the professional arena. Ive just returned from the States and watched the so called ‘STARS’ post some unbelievable times with so little training. I watched one guy step off the plane and 1 hour later ran 44.2 with hardley any warm up. Ive spoken to US coaches/ trainers and drugs are still alive and well – so sad.

  19. karrtt1234 says:

Ashford was clean… I would have loved to have seen what Raelene Boyle would have done at this first world cup – if she wasn’t at odds with Aussie officals she would have been in both the 100m and 200m here. Definately would have medal in both.

  20. run3hours says:

    Avelyn ashford’leg was long,but Marlies Gorh’s
leg was not long. How many times did Gorh win against Ashford?I think Evelyn ashford was a
clean athlete.I like Gorh’s pitch running.

  21. athlete5399 says:

I strongly believe that Ashford was NOT on drugs. She was very fast from a young age and she had a natural leg speed. She was not all about power like the East Germans, she was just damn fast!

  22. aretold says:

Did you notice that evelyn ashford easily beat Gohr in severeal races. If gohr on drug, I don’t think ashford was clean.

  23. run3hours says:

Hello! I’m a Japanese. I’m a fan of Marlies Gohr.I want to see her race. For example,10.88 in 1977&in1982,10.81 in 1983, 4x100m relay in Chanpionships in 1983 and so on. please let us me much more! Thank you.

  24. hurdler600 says:

    Hello George,
Great comments but why is the Europa cup 77 so secret ? is there ANYWAY we could see it ?
although I do respect our agreements

  25. newnamegeorge says:

It was in a German documentary i got sent that interviewed Gohr post career and showed several races from 77-78 i had never seen before, including the 10.88. it has definitely never been shown in the UK.
I do have full coverage of the 77 Europa Cup but due to the conditions i agreed to when i got it i cannot post it
