Heather Hunte beats Sonia Lannaman here in a windy 11.01 to Sonia’s 11.06. World class sprinting that we havent seen in the UK since.

Why did that white chick run to the blocks!?

  2. Mark5058 says:

That has to be one of the greatest ever all-British sprint fields, if only Andrea Lynch had been in there.

That’s exactly how I remember it – I think it was semi-automatic timing and so was rounded up to 10.8. Statos used to reckon that .24 should be added to hand-timed results to reflect what an electronic timing would have been. In this case, that means a performance no slower than 11.04 – when the WR was Stecher’s 11.07. Yes, it was windy, but it was also early in the season (May). If only she hadn’t pulled that hamstring during relay training in Montreal!

What a great run by Heather Oakes married to Gary our 400m hurdler. Both got bronze medals in Moscow. Gary was also beaten by the eastern drug cheats. I wonder how his life would have changed if he had struck gold in a fair field? Heather was a powerful runner and another talent that came and went.

Hi hurdler600. I tried to get the 1977 Europa Cup semi 100m from the BBC but the footage has been a lost can you believe!! A real shame as this is the fastest any British woman has run electronically. I’m finding out all sorts of snippets from you about the goings on from the Eastern Block! I’d love to have a chat with you one day :-)

It was Ainslie Bennet who told me- he was in the mens race! wind or no wind that was fast!!

  10. athlete5399 says:

Yes, she did run 10.8 in 1976 handtimed. so in that instance it has to be rounded up. I never knew the actual time on the clock though and that she ran faster than the men!!

  11. hurdler600 says:

Did you have any luck with obtainning footage of that Europa cup semi final Im impressed with your memory That must have been some race , I believe she beat Renate Stecher another East German. There was a rumour that the Communists didnt want the world record to leave them thats why a positive wind recording was given. I dont know how much credence that story holds ?

  12. hurdler600 says:

I think Sonia actually ran a windy 10.75 secs in Kiev that was rounded up to 10.8 and actually ran faster than the mens race which included Ainslie Bennet !

  13. athlete5399 says:

Yes, you’re quite right! I tried to get that footage of the race (it was the Europa Cup semi in 1977 and the wind was just 3.6m – bit geeky to know that I know! hehe). I’m in touch with Sonia Lannaman and am due to go and meet her one day soon!

I havent checked this but I think the fastest (automatic) time windy or not for a GB athlete was Lannaman’s 10.93 in 1977. So sad no one has carried on from these athletes since.
